Pen and Ink art has been around for over four thousand years yet oddly enough aren’t represented by any major sites or locations other than this particular one.
Pen and Ink totally dominated mankind’s history as a writing or artistic instrument. A quill pen controlled the market place for over one thousand years simply because no other mediums were invented at that time. Most inks during those days were dark brown or black that were made from ash. Metal tips (nibs) didn’t surface for centuries therefore pen and ink drawings represented the greatest art medium available for those interested in doing artistic expressions.
The inventor of the ballpoint pen was Mr. John J. Load a citizen of the United States, residing at Weymonth, in the county of Norfolk and Common Wealth of Massachusetts, patented the first ballpoint pen. The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October, 1888, to John J Loud, registration No. 392,046. The pen had a rotating small steel ball bearing. As with modern ballpoint pens, the ball was held in place by a socket. It was fitted with a means for supplying heavy, sticky ink to the ball. The pen proved to be too coarse for letter writing, but it could be used to mark rough surfaces, especially leather.However, the patent was commercially unexploited and another ballpoint pen device was patented by Van Vechten Riesburg in 1916. The patent lapsed without improvement renewal. Commercial models appeared in 1895, but the first satisfactory model of a ballpoint pen was designed by two Hungarian brothers living in Argentina: Lazlo, a journalist, and George Biro, a chemist. Lazlo noticed that the type of ink used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving the paper dry and smudge-free. He decided to create a pen using quick-drying ink instead of India ink. The thicker ink, though, would not flow from an ordinary pen nib and Biro had to devise a new type of point. Lazlo put a tiny metal ball bearing in the tip of a pen, the success of the ballpoint pen is due to the accuracy in which the ball is ground.
A ballpoint pen can produce three unique lines that no other pen system in history have ever done. A long flowing line, dark rich colors and the subtlest camera ready art line in history. Introducing those qualities, artists and their ballpoint pen ink drawings to the world is what my American folk art program has done before one billion others worldwide. Today, I have over eleven hundred artworks and forty-five ballpoint pen artists archived, documented and published and that’s “News Worthy” or “Art History in the makings”!
The Bic Pen Corporation stated five years ago that they single handedly manufactured over one hundred billion ballpoint pens! (100,000,000,000) Needless to say, Bic is just one pen company world wide therefore it’s totally staggering how many are being used. Pen and Ink totally dominated the writing or art market places for centuries therefore society was completely elevated by there usage. Yet today many artists using newer art mediums refer to our pens as being common to cheap!
Its rather interesting the King of all art mediums are being criticized by artists. The bible, novels, books, treaties, documents, letters, checks, manuscripts, notes or greeting cards are or have been produced by pens! That indicates our pens or ballpoints have completely changed the world at large not just part of the art world like lesser tools or mediums. I might add that erasing ink isn’t possible therefore it’s much harder or more difficult to use than most other art mediums as well.
In 1980-82 era Parker and possibly Cross pen companies manufactured an extra-fine (ultra) ballpoint pen tip which was considerably sharper than today’s fine tips put out by many companies. Those amazing tips produced an ultra fine line, halftone or cross hatching never seen before by any camera really art tool or instruments. Some people talk about silver tone or engraving as being better at making details yet both of those mediums couldn’t produce a half tone line. That’s because the fine or extra fine lines are as detailed yet our half tones are more subtle or amazing!
How can the most subtle graphic camera ready line in history be considered as being a product of a cheap tool? Our art community or world certainly has a political side to it folks that arrive from the artists, buyers, critics, investors or general public. Do cheap people make cheap statements about inexpensive great instrument to support their own interest?
Our ballpoint pens produce a half tone line from a full tone ink because of its oil based ink supply. Besides that it delivers a brilliant colored ink that can compete with all other art mediums, printing presses, copiers or photographic processes as never before folks. One of the things that held back pen and ink’s progress was a lacking of bright colored inks. Water based inks used by all pen systems other than a ballpoint just couldn’t deliver what it takes to attract those interested in deep rich art colors!
An exquisite half tone, beautiful rich colors plus a great flowing line is what makes our instrument the greatest selling art medium in history. A ballpoint pen is also the best carbon copy maker that again changed the worlds record keeping system. It’s strong tips produced triplicates of each transition and that was an universal upgrade my friends and fellow artists. Long flowing or bold lines produce an outstanding spontaneous creative drawing.
I’m posting this information on our forum so that others will see what’s going on within this art movement. I’ve surfed the Internet for eight years and for some reasons can’t find others publishing such materials, facts or train of thought. How can the public, art community, investors or buyers within our society support what we’re all doing if those within our movement remain silent? Silence might be golden, however not in advertisement or marketing.
We have a new instrument that simply hasn’t been commercialized as an art medium therefore reaping in the benefits is far more difficult to achieve. Take a look around and you’ll notice this network has the greatest group of ballpoint pen artists on the Web. That’s fantastic seeing we’re the most published pen and ink art forum or network on the Internet that hosts one billion plus registered users.
Commercial artists bring in more money than the oil industry and provide just about all of the business or corporate marketing programs. That means advertising, marketing, sales, promotions, public relations and things like publishing. Oddly enough countless millions of fine artists disregard all those parts of society or departments yet wonder why progress isn’t coming their way? What do you think?
